Derrick’s practice focuses on employment and personnel issues, including Title VII, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, and the Fair Labor Standards Act. He also works with local governments and officials on claims involving constitutional law, including Section 1983 claims.
He has more than 14 years of experience successfully defending public and private employers in many types of lawsuits, as well as keeping them up to date on changes in the law and helping them keep their policies current. During that time, he has defended government agencies and their officials in federal and state court cases as well as administrative proceedings of all kinds.
Derrick is a former law clerk to U.S. Magistrate Judge Robert E. Wier, which offered an invaluable perspective from within the judiciary as well as the opportunity to learn from a talented jurist. With his unique blend of skills and experience, Derrick has successfully represented clients in a variety of forums, ranging from administrative agencies to state and federal appellate courts.

Defending local governments and their officials against Section 1983 claims involving due process, search and seizure, excessive force, false arrest, and malicious prosecution. Court decisions include:
Hoskins v. York, No. 6:17-cv-00084 (E.D.Ky. 2022). Successfully defended police officer on claims of malicious prosecution and wrongful detention in a unanimous jury verdict.
Williams v. City of Stanford, 2021 WL 1343507 (E.D. Ky. April 9, 2021) Successful summary judgment motion to dismiss federal due process claim involving home demolition
